Why Acrylic is your best choice in material construction.
When designing your new bathroom or remodeling an existing one, remember the focal point is the tub. And what could be better than choosing a whirlpool bathtub for this project. Here you can come to escape your everyday stress to relax and unwind. Use your whirlpool bathtub for the many therapeutic benefits it provides to help ease body aches and pains. While dreaming about this relaxing experience, don't overlook the importance in choosing the perfect material for your new whirlpool bathtub. Whirlpool baths come in 4 basic materials and you should consider which of these choices will best enhance your bathing experience and look new for many years.
The 4 Choices
Hydrotherapy from Laurel Mountain Whirlpool baths improves circulation, stimulate nerve endings, and help to relax you sore and tired muscles. Adjustable jets supply a strong yet gentle flow of water to the parts of your body that require soothing. These adjustable jets can be directed to your neck, back, feet, and other parts of your body. Your whirlpool bath provides relaxation and helps to ease your aches and pains.
1. Gel-coat Fiberglass Reinforced Polyester
Known simply as fiberglass, this lightweight material is available in a variety of sizes and shapes to fit any bathroom. One drawback of a fiberglass whirlpool is its extremely porous surface makes getting mold and mildew tough to get out. Color is sprayed onto the lower-quality polyester surface making it more susceptible to stains and dulling over time. This can make your new bathroom look very old in a relatively short period of time.
2. Porcelain Enameled Steel
Requires a tiled surface called a "wet wall" that costs more than the tub itself to be applied. Even though this material is sturdy, the enamel coating has a tendency to chip. Because it is made of steel, it is very cold to the touch and cools the bath water faster.
3. Cast Iron
Having been the material from which claw foot tubs were made, it's the most durable bath material on the market. But it is only available in a very limited amount of shapes and sizes. And because it's so heavy, any tub made of cast iron may require additional structural support in the floor beneath it. Like enameled surfaces, cast iron is cold to the touch. Just like enameled steel baths, the coating can chip.
4. Cast Acrylic
It's warm to the touch making for a more relaxing experience. The water stays warmer much longer than the other 3 choices. This highly durable, non-porous solid surface will better resist scum and mildew. Its surface is much easier to clean than the other ones too. When cleaned according to its manufacturer directions, the surface will retain its showroom finish for many years.

Cast acrylic bathtubs are available in a wide variety of shapes and colors. LUCITE® cast acrylic sheet is unique because the color goes all the way through the material. The color is not just sprayed onto the surface as with the other 3 choices. Cast acrylic color will not fade over time and it can absorb impacts that would chip the other materials. Cast acrylic is slightly more expensive than fiberglass, but over the long term, it's your best investment.
